Summary: The story begins focusing on this couple, jack and Mellisa McGuane, who adopted this baby girl named Angelina. They went through the entire process and they were the family chosen by the birth mother to take this kid, and they all lived happily ever after right? Wrong! The birth father, who was out of the country, being pushed by his father Judge Moreland, contacts them and decides he wants the baby back. How is this possible right? Well while he was out of the country the mother signed over her rights to the baby, but he didn't. The judge and his son haved scheduled a visit with the couple and things will hopefully get sorted out.
Reaction: Interesting plot but it is really, really slow to start. I am wondering why CJ Box has choosen this as the setting becaue it isn't like him at all to choose something like this?

Summary: In this section Judge Moreland and his son come to visit the couple for their first meeting about this issue. Not everything goes as planned for the McGuanes, because the judge pretty much tell them that they have absolutely no say in the mater and they have three weeks to say good-bye. But they hope to get the son to sign without his father knowing so they can keep angelina, so they are nice to him all the time. later that night the father, Garrett, comes by with two of his friends and they vandalize the couples bathroom and then ditch when the couple invited them over to atch the broncos game, so they could be nice to him.
Reaction: I want to pucnh this kid and his two friends in the face. That probably wouldn't be a good idea, since their gangsters, bu I would do it anyway.

Summary:In this section of the book, Jack invites his two friends, along with a plummer, over to his house so they can decide what to do about the situation at hand. This makes sense because his friend Cody is the lead investigater in the Denver Investigation unit. His other frind, Brian, is a gay business man who has a way of finding out information on really high notch people in society. They come to the conclusion that the couple should continue being nice to him until he does something so bad that the court will have no choice but to revoke custody away from him and his family. Cody gets drunk and says some things that he shouldn't have said and the friends begin to have tension groming between them. That would make an interseting twist in the story. Also Jack reveals some of his past that made him into what he is today.
Reaction: I completely disagree with the idea of being nice to him. They should throw the little peice of crap in jail along with his mexican gangster buddies. They are taking a very bad approach to this and they should listen to their friend Cody. This is going to blow up in their face hard core by the end of the book.

Summary: The main character Jack goes to court to see how judge moreland conducts his courtroom. When he gets there his freind cody who is a detective in denver gets made into a fool in the courtroom and Jack knows that it has something to do with their relationship. After that his freind brian is at his house that night and he has dug up some dirt of the moreland family. Some of it is interesting, but none of it can be fully proven, they are hoping of using it as a scare tactic. Later jack is assulted by soem kids shooting him with paintball guns. Later still Cody shows up at their house, drunk as a skunk, and tell them that he beat up one of The Moreland boys friends, and Jack and Brian are going to search for the kid.
Reaction; That whole section is full of twists and turns. First off it makes it look like the Morelands are going to win the case hands down, but then when the dirt is revealed on the Morelands it appears that the main couple is going to win. Then CJ had to throw this excellent twist into the book and i don't even know what to think about it. I hope everything just goes away... or i hope he gets a gun and starts shooting people.

Summary:In this section they find out a little bit more about the boy named luis, garrets buddy and the boy that cody beat the crap out of, was found dead ina river and it was deemed as an act of gang violence. We also learn that judge john moreland wasn't always a moreland. His mother was a teenager when she had him so she just gave him to her sister. So his mother was really his aunt and his daddy was really his uncle. He hated his parents and they allegedly died in a car accident whe he was 18. He had an allibi that night because he as with his girlfriend. later in life he married that girl and she some how died on a hiking trip with him and his son garret. They are a little curious about that. Also in this section jack learns that the mayor has issued a backround check on him and his job may be in jeopardy.
Reaction:I think that judge moreland killed his parents and is wife. I also think that things are about to get really ugly really fast and people are going to get hurt, both emotionally and physically. The book is starting to get really good.

Summary: In the beginning of this section, Jack goes on a business trip to Germany for some traveler's expo thing. It seems like an awfully weird time to take a trip, but hey thats just me. Anyway that doesn't really amount to anything but while he was gone the fake hood of a moreland boy poisned his dog so that they had to put him down. They decide that they need a new plan. They take a trip up to Montana to visit Cody's Uncle, who is pretty mucha hitman. THey ask him to go to Denver to scare they bejesus out of this kid so that he will sign the Custody papers so that they can have full Costody of Angelina. When they are through talking to him they decide taht he is way to crazy and uncontrolled to comple this task for them so they tell him that they are haveing second thoughts. That is where the section ends... no cliff hangers or nothing.
Reaction: I think that this is getting really deep in the sense that they are very seriously thinking about killing this kid. I do not know how this is going to go for them but i think it is going to be bad.

Summary:In thisi section Cody and Jack and Mellissa and Angelina all go to Jacks parents house for dinner. Jack dispised his parents when he was a little kid and he never wanted to go back. I dont understand taht personally becaue they seem really nice. His father apologizes for being so tough on him and Jack feels like maybe they could try and rebuild that relationship that was broken so long ago. Also in this section, on the way home from Montana, they get a call from a mexican on brians phone saying some bad stuff. They go to the hospital where Brian is becasue the mexican gangsters beat him up. Brian is dead and the Moreland boy was home all along. They have nothing to go off of.
Reaction: Okay now i am angry at these stupid mexis. They don't get to do that and get away with it. I think that the moreland boy set brian up to be in a spot where his stupid gangster buddies could jump him.

Summary: In this section Jack loses his job because of the tension that he is creating with the judge. The judge went to the Mayor and now he is unemployeed which is a really bad thing for two people who are about to be in a judicial fight over adopting a baby. In his anger Jack goes to the judges office and chews him out but the judge is the one that wins overall. He puts the family on house arrest so that they are to be guarded by two police officers at a time. This doesn't go good especially when Uncle Jeter shows up and kills 5 people in a mexican gangster bar, and none of the people that he killed was Garret so that was a waste. Also Brian has died from his wounds and it was probably for the best becaue he would have been mentally handicapped for the rest of his life.
Reaction: This book is going south in a hurry. Pople are dying left and right and i think that it is not even close to being over. The judge still has to show his true colors to the McGuanes because I really hope that they win the case in the end.

Summary:It is thanksgiving, and Mellisa and Jack invite the cops that are guearding them to join them for dinner. They talk for a while soon the talk turns to the pedaphile thing that has been uncovered and jack wants to link it back to the judge or someone. Well they all get drunk and watch the football game and they just talk and realy get to know each other, i think this is a good plan becasue the family is trying to get some cops on their side. After the dinner Cody takes off and they dont talk to him or see him again in the section. They all go to Brians funeral and there are a lot of people there that they don't know. On the way out Jack bumps into the man that fired him andt hey talk about how Jack can find some dirt on Judge Moreland. After their talk Jack sees Garret's hummer with two figures in it. He wonders why he cant just sit out on his porch witha shotgun and keep the world away from his family. They don't really see a way out at all and it finally sinks in that this is really going to go down. This is their last night with Angelina and they think about all the things that they could have done to keep this from happening or at least delaying it a little bit.
Reaction: OMG I felt really bad for the family becasue nobody should have to go through this, ever. If i was them i would just start shooting everybody that i saw and then see how things play out. Maybe they could make a break for Mexico or something. I would do anything i could to keep my daughter away from those monsters.

Summary:I find it hard to reaveal the ending to a very good book, so i won't. Just know that Judge Moreland and garret both get what they deserve. The McGuanes get what they want but not without consequences. Cody gets the life he always dreamed of, and in about 1 year everything will be great and they will all live happily ever after...
Reaction: It was a great book. Kinda slow in the beginning, but just like CJ Box always does it turned out to be a suspenseful ,and captivating book. I would say it is in the top five of books that i have ever read.
